Position: Reptile and Amphibian Field Technician
Organization: Georgian Bay Turtle Hospital

Term: summer & fall/winter positions

Location: Based near Orillia, study area roughly Muskoka and Lake Simcoe watershed, travel to other project sites may be required

Housing: Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site or in the field.

Duties will vary with the nature of each position, but will include:

  • Target species will include various turtles, snakes, salamanders, and frogs
  • Survey wetlands, water bodies, and along roads, day or night in all weather conditions
  • Capture turtles for data collection and radio-telemetry, set traps, install nest cages, monitor cameras
  • Survey for other species at risk (i.e. plants, birds) as appropriate
  • Supervise volunteers, perform public education programs about turtles and other herpetofauna
  • Assist with the operations and development of a turtle rehabilitation centre and related activities (educational resources, videos, etc)

Duration: Varies with position, extension up to one year internship is possible

Salary: Varies depending on the position


  • Ability to follow detailed protocols, stay highly organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
  • Proven time management and leadership skills
  • High degree of indestructibility and perseverance despite a variety of environmental conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
  • Strong swimming skills (position requires wading, swimming, and paddling in cold water)
  • Valid class G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record
  • Oral communication and people skills
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations with a positive attitude
  • Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
  • Positive attitude and passion for reptiles and their conservation

Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site or in the field. Previous field and canoe/paddle experience is an asset.
