Position Title: Lead Biologist – Wildlife Preservation Canada’s Native Pollinator Initiative
Organization: Widlife Preservation Canada
Location: while we are an NGO based in Guelph, relocation is not absolutely necessary; working remotely is a possibility

Contract Period: August 1, 2018 to March 31, 2020 (with possibility of continuation depending on funding)

Position Summary:

The Lead Biologist will provide overall coordination for Wildlife Preservation Canada’s (WPC’s) Native Pollinator Initiative, which currently includes conservation breeding programs for native bumble bees in Ontario and Taylor's checkerspot butterfly in British Columbia as well as monitoring, research and citizen science components in Ontario and Alberta, and an active role in multi-partner collaborations such as The Lead Biologist will work closely with administrative staff, and with project coordinators and biologists at multiple project sites across Canada to ensure delivery of WPC’s pollinator conservation projects. A primary role of the Lead Biologist position will be to build on WPC’s strengths and experience with pollinator husbandry, field research, and citizen science to identify and develop new WPC-led projects for native pollinator conservation across Canada. Given the nature of the work, a flexible schedule is required, and some weekend and holiday work will be necessary.

Major Responsibilities

  • Manage development and evaluation of the captive breeding program for the yellow-banded bumble bee ensuring that best-practice protocols are in place and continue to be improved in collaboration with all facility partners.
  • Line manage the program coordinator responsible for delivery of the conservation breeding, field monitoring, citizen science and research components of the pollinator initiative in Ontario.
  • Collaborate with University and other research partners to develop, implement and evaluate monitoring and research investigating causes of population declines of wild bumble bees, e.g. effects of neonicotinoids.
  • Work with the Conservation Programs Director and B.C. Lead Biologist to develop and evaluate conservation recovery activities and maintain positive relationships with existing partners involved in Taylor’s checkerspot conservation and seek additional partner opportunities for future expansion related to the butterfly conservation breeding program.
  • Lead effective and efficient development, implementation, and evaluation of multiple citizen science survey projects across Canada, ensuring that WPC is well placed to be a leader in this field.
  • Provide support for, including review and identification of photo submissions in Canada, evaluation of smartphone apps and website updates, volunteer recognition, and other actions as required.
  • Prepare proposals and budgets for grant applications and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Maintain detailed program budget and ensure that expenditures stay within forecast.
  • Write and/or assist with reports for funders, governments, landowners, WPC (for internal and external use), and other audiences as necessary.
  • Mentor pollinator program staff and ensure staff management, recruitment and training is carried out to deliver annual project objectives (e.g. job descriptions are up to date, recruitment is carried out on time for any new or seasonal positions, staff are properly trained prior to each field season).
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping of all project data. Review and analyze field data and citizen science data when applicable.
  • Develop and present the science communication and outreach components of the pollinator program (e.g. in-person presentations, print materials, blogs, social media, online educational materials and traditional media), and provide timely content for WPC’s social media, working closely with the Office Administrator and Fundraising & Communications Manager to ensure project “news” and achievements are publicized in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with partners and stakeholders that have complementary pollinator conservation visions to WPC, including other NGOs and/or community groups and provincial and federal government partners.
  • Actively participate in Recovery Group meetings for Garry Oak Ecosystem invertebrates (which includes Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly), Ontario Butterfly Species at Risk and other collaborations as new projects and partnerships are developed.
  • Actively identify and develop opportunities to expand the pollinator program and provide knowledgeable input and advice to the Executive Director, Conservation Programs Director, and other WPC staff with respect to new recovery activities and partners for pollinator conservation in Canada. Lead work to develop, implement, and evaluate these new projects as appropriate.
  • Assist the Conservation Programs Director in making decisions by staying current with pollinator conservation issues and new research and through the collection, interpretation and dissemination of information relative to WPC’s expanding pollinator conservation program.

Qualifications, Skills, Expertise and Qualities for this position:

  • Minimum M.Sc. in relevant field (e.g. Entomology, Biology, Environmental Science) and 5+ years of applied experience
  • Experience with and/or extensive knowledge of captive husbandry practices and breeding programs for insects
  • Strong existing network and/or demonstrated networking ability relative to North American pollinator conservation
  • Field project and/or staff management experience.
  • Experienced in insect population monitoring, data management, analysis, and report writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in species at-risk issues.
  • Ability to write successful grant applications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the production and review of scientific and technical documents, outreach materials, and media pieces (social and traditional).
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills, with an ability to multi-task and perform under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution, facilitation, and fostering smooth relationships with co-workers, partners, field contractors and volunteers, team work and team building.
  • Physically fit and with a positive mindset to endure working in rough terrains, variable weather conditions, and with exposure to biting and stinging insects.
  • Able and willing to work long hours and be away for multiple days at a time, including weekends.
  • Highly self motivated and resilient in the face of adversity, showing initiative and a willingness to go the extra length to save the planet, one pollinator species at a time.
