OTTAWA JOBS

Position: Avian Care Technician
Organization: Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

The Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre is a long established registered charitable organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of over 3500 injured, ill and orphaned wild birds that are found and brought by caring members of the greater Ottawa community every year. While our mission focuses on providing the essential care to the birds entrusted to us and providing the public with critical, as needed information, we also recognize the importance of engaging and educating our community.

Schedule days of work: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Hours of work 7am-5:30pm
20-30 hours/week

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Daily feeding of nestlings, fledglings and adult wild birds.
  • Cleaning of cages, flight cages and other general cleaning duties.
  • Conduct of intake exams and initiate course of treatment.
  • Medication administration and recovery assessment.
  • Responsible for complying with aseptic techniques.
  • Assist with maintenance of facility.
  • Respond to public inquiries by phone and in person.

Requirements:

  • Have an up-to-date tetanus shot.
  • Previous wildlife rehabilitation experience is an asset but not required. Most applicants are involved in biology, wildlife, environmental or veterinary-related studies, but we will consider all hardworking applicants who demonstrate an enthusiastic attitude!

Abilities and qualifications:

  • Strong personal work ethic, high level of integrity, punctuality, initiative, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as cleaning, lifting (up to 40 pounds), and use step ladders.
  • Ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful circumstances; adapt to new and fast paced situations.
  • Ability to organize tasks, set goals, meet deadlines,
  • Extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently while following directions and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills; both written and oral.
