Position: Finance and Business Development Officer
Organization: Ha'oom Fisheries Society
Location: Tofino, Vancouver Island BC (possibily remotely)

Tenure: 0.8 or full-time, permanent
Salary: $70,000 - $90,000 + competitive benefits package

About Ha’oom Society

TheHa’oom Society works cooperatively to support and facilitate the participation of the Ahousaht, Ehattesaht, Mowachaht/Muchalaht, Hesquiaht and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations (the “Five Nations”) in the implementation of their commercial right-based fishery. This includes implementing fisheries for the Five Nations based on their inherent and constitutionally-protected aboriginal right to harvest and sell fish; enhance the capacity and role of the Five Nations in the management and sustainability of fisheries, in collaboration with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada where appropriate; support and incorporate traditional authority and knowledge of the Nations and leadership in relation to fisheries resources in management of fisheries; support the Five Nations’ fishing culture and prosperous fishing communities through support for and cultivation of other opportunities related to fishing, harvesting, fisheries habitat and resource maintenance and restoration, managing, monitoring, marketing and/or processing of fisheries resources; and uphold the Nuu-chah-nulth principles of hishuk ish tsa’walk (everything is connected, everything is one) and isaak(respect) in the approach to managing opportunities and fisheries for the Five Nations.

About the Role

The Finance Manager is an exciting new role within the Ha’oom Society. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Financial Manager is responsible for directing, overseeing and managing financial, administrative and advisory services for Ha’oom Fisheries Society. The work requires strategic direction, leadership and innovation, and supports the enhancement and fiscal accountability related to the Nation’s rights-based commercial fisheries program. The Finance Manager will help shape our emerging organization, lead the financial administration of the fisheries program, act as an architect in the development of the Ha’oom Society’s business development, including the future development of a financial Trust and/or future corporate entity.

Role Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Finance/Accounting degree with specialization in accounting, finance, business administration, commerce, management or economics; or Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Experience working within a First Nations organization.
  • Experience working in the Not For Profit Sector.
  • Experience in the preparation of internal financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with budgets, forecasting and variance modelling.
  • Experience with financial statement preparation (accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll and reporting).
  • Experience with data entry, record keeping and computer systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, (Excel and Word) and Accounting systems (Sage 50).
  • Experience in reporting and compliance with government agencies (such as Government Contribution Agreements, WCB, Pension,etc.).
  • Excellent communications skills with external service providers such as bankers, auditors, Government agencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effective and skilled at oral and written communication.
  • Analytical ability.
  • Follows through on commitments.

  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
