Is it safe to go for a walk?

“Stay home” may be the sound bite we're hearing, but two words don't tell the whole story.

“While the messaging has been occasionally muddled from different levels of government, Toronto’s top public health officers have been consistent: you can go for a walk. You actually should go for a walk.”

Are you walking? Twice a day?

How Walking Makes Us Healthier, Happier and Brainier — “Neuroscientist Shane O’Mara believes that plenty of regular walking unlocks the cognitive powers of the brain like nothing else. He explains why you should exchange your gym kit for a pair of comfy shoes and get strolling.” Full story...

Concerned about physical distancing?

Good news for sidewalk walking — apparently the 2-metre rule has an exception. From Ottawa Public Health:

“You can go outside (for example – to take a walk). While outside, avoid crowds and maintain a distance of two metres (six feet) from those around you. Make an effort to step-aside, or pass others quickly and courteously on sidewalks. Passing someone on the sidewalk is not considered close contact or a significant risk for exposure to COVID-19.” — Ottawa Public Health Physical Distancing

Looking for work? Or to get out of a rut?

While walking is typically an unpaid activity, it can lead to paid work or starting your own business. Many creative people get their best ideas while out for long walks (without earbuds). — Walking and Creative Thinking

How can walking lead to paid work?

  1. Most broadly, walking can bring you clarity, creative and positive thinking that will help you in both your personal and professional life. Turn off the music for half an hour or more... and always bring along a pen and paper.
  2. Some jobs involve walking, for example mail carrier, walking tour guides, dog walking, and a variety of other outdoor jobs.

Social distancing: Coping with stress, anxiety, isolation, loneliness

"Walking can help ease two of the big side effects of COVID-19 — isolation and inactivity. If you have no symptoms and haven’t been instructed to self-isolate, get out for a walk.” — Canada Walks

“We've been doing lots of walking without the need for a dog to use as an excuse. There are lots of people walking in our neighbourhood and none are offended if you give one another a "wide berth" — you can spot a smile from more than six feet away!” – B&B
